Woah... this shrine is a WIP!!! Go away until it's finished!!!

Splatoon is a third-person shooter game set in a post-apocalyptic world in which you play as either an Inkling or an Octoling. The three main games each focus on an online multiplayer mode known as Turf War, but there are several other modes as well, including the zombie horde mode Salmon Run, the single player Story Mode, and more. There is also an upcoming spinoff known as Splatoon Raiders, where players explore the mysterious Spiralite Islands with the idol group Deep Cut.
Splatoon is very important to us and has been our special interest since summer of 2024. Shooters aren't usually our favorite type of game, but Splatoon's lore and worldbuilding is so detailed and well-thought-out that we couldn't help but get attached. And when we did, we discovered so many more things that we loved about it - the music, the idols, the Splatfests, the community, Salmon Run, watching competitive Splatoon competitions... I could go on!
Splatoon makes us happy! We get giddy just thinking about it, sometimes. It makes us smile when brought up in casual conversation, and looking at Splatoon-related content can cheer us up when we're feeling sad. We know a lot about the game, and have, on multiple occasions, found ourselves internally correcting innacurate things people say about the game when watching Splatoon lore videos. We have lots of merch, both handmade and purchased, and are currently working on our Amiibo collection (just a few sets to go!)
I think it'd be a stretch to say that Splatoon is our life (although there definitely was a time when we felt that way, back when we first got into it), but it is definitely a very important part of our life. Splatoon my beloved...

Our History With Splatoon
Like we said before, we didn't start playing Splatoon until mid-2024, which was already decently far into Splatoon 3's life. But that's not actually where our history with Splatoon starts! No, instead it begins somewhere in the late 2010s, on our 3ds.
See, while there weren't actually any Splatoon games on 3ds, there were, for some reason, Splatoon 2 trailers on the 3ds eShop. And we didn't have anything better to do, so we watched them, enough times that we still remember watching the Octo Expansion Trailer and the 2016 Squid Sisters concert (which was also on 3ds eShop for some reason). To this day, that concert remains very nostalgic to us.
And you have to understand, this is a big thing! We don't have a lot of memories pre-2024, and anything pre-Covid is extra difficult to recall. Remembering that chunk of our life is like remembering a dream - it's slippery, and scattered. The fact that Splatoon was able to make such a big imprint on us that we still remember it to this day, and the fact that it was able to do that just through trailers and a concert, is absolutely wild. To this day, we are still amazed by this fact.
Anyway, we went on to be interested whenever we saw Splatoon trailers, but didn't actually get the game itself until 2024. We got it for our birthday alongside Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and at the time we were definitely more excited about the latter game, so Splatoon 3 wasn't really something we expected to get really into. Just a game to casually enjoy, you know?
And at first, that actually is what happened. We liked the game fine, but as we said before, shooters aren't really our thing, and the gameplay was just fun enough to keep us playing about once a month, but not much more than that. It was fine.
And then, we stumbled upon a Splatoon lore video on Youtube. And our entire outlook just... changed, just like that. Like the flip of a lightswitch.
Suddenly, we were obsessed, devouring every piece of Splatoon information we could find like a ravenous beast, learning as much as we could about the series we'd somehow missed out on our entire childhood. Where had Splatoon been all our life??? It was clearly perfect for us. The deep lore, the meaningful themes, the attention to detail, the MUSIC... it really did seem like it had been made just for us.
We watched lots of gameplay footage of previous games and watched playthroughs of all the story modes, too, so we were able to vicariously experience Splatoon 1 and 2 that way. We did have a Wii U when we were young, though, and we sometimes wonder about the AU where we did get into Splatoon at a young age. But I think it's good we did only start having an interest in it when we were older, or we might have ended up having negative associations with it like we do with some other things we liked as a kid.
Nowadays, we don't play Splatoon as much as we used to, but we still adore the game and think about it all the time. We're Splatoon-obsessed, and we hope that we always will be. Woomy!
Our Weapons
Octo Shot Replica
Our current main. It's a Splattershot - a classic, with a standard output and virtually no downsides. A great fire rate, a good kit, and not a bad ink radius. Great for combat, which is generally our preferred role in Turf War.
Sploosh-o-matic
This weapon was our main for the longest time... it has a faster fire rate than the Octo Shot and does more damage, but has low accuracy and a very short range as a consquence. I think it's kit is a bit mediocore... but does have a very good ink radius!
N-ZAP '85
Our ranked weapon of choice, mostly for the Tacticooler special, but it also has a good ink radius, not a bad fire rate, and deals a decent amount of damage. Just a decent weapon all-around, really, with few downsides. A joy to play.
Aerospray RG
A favorite amongst casual players... we really only use this weapon when we play with our friend Yuki. It has an incredibly fast fire rate and is optimized for ink coverage. The special meter also fills absurdly fast with this weapon.

Lyric Videos
Splatoon music is sung in gibberish, and most songs have no official lyrics by Nintendo. All of the videos below consist of fan-made lyrics designed phonetically, so it seems like the singers are actually singing in English.

Feelings on Characters from Source
Captain 3 (they/them)
Three's the best! They're cool and strong and capable; stoic but also compassionate and funny. We were together in source, and they often invited me on Squidbeak Splatoon missions with them, even though I'm not actually a member. They're the best ever.
Agent 4 (they/them)
Four's my friend. I was roomates with them for a while, they're pretty cool. A bit... chaotic, and all over the place. I think they have a crush on Marie, but I also think they are definitely not her type (if she even has a type) so. I do feel a bit bad for them, they're often left out of things... plus what happened at the Spire...
Pearl & Marina (she/her | she/her)
I think above all else, they're inspiring. They're full of empathy, always standing up for others, especially the people they care about. They're the embodiment of love and positive change. They were like mothers to me, honestly.
Cuttlefish (he/him)
He's my friend! When I initially got my memories back and remembered what the Squidbeak Splatoon did to us in the Domes, I was really mad, but after the events of Octo Expansion, the Squidbeak Splatoon took a step back from that sort of business, and he started treated the Octarians like real people rather than enemies.
DJ Octavio (he/him)
He... didn't treat us great, in the Domes. I mean, things definitely could've been better. He was doing his best, but in trying so hard for a better future for Octarians, he failed to look after us in the present. But he's aware of that now, and he's trying harder to make life in the Domes better for those who do choose to stay.
Acht (he/they)
Also my friend! We had a lot in common - both sanitized, both having names that mean eight, both being grossed out by Pearl and Marina's nonstop flirting... that sort of thing. We weren't, like, the besties of all time, but I thought only positively of them. In real life, we're friends with another system who has an Acht fictive (hi Acht if you're reading this what's up) so I'm closer to him now than I was in source.
How Sanitization Works
(by a half-sanitized Octarian)
Sanitization... well, the way sanitization impacts you depends entirely on the type of the sanitized ink. There are three different types of ink - non-diluted, 50% diluted, and 75% diluted. Dilution is proportional to how much water is mixed into the ink. (This is the way inkfish ink works, too - ink used for regular battles is generally 75% diluted.) All three forms of ink are applied via submersion, but non-diluted sanitized ink must be injected as well to work.
The sanitized enemy Octarians in Kamabo Co. are the ones who use the 75% diluted sanitized ink. It funtions pretty much the same as regular ink, but it is dangerous and will hurt inkfish if you get too much of it on you. It's kinda acidic and eats through membrane really easily. It's painful in a way that normal ink isn't, but it's not gonna turn you into a sanitized person, it's not strong enough for that.
50% diluted sanitized ink is what Commander Tartar used to extract the memories of test subjects. There's a massive basin of this ink above the portion of the Deepsea Metro that Kamabo Co. operates in - that's where the character creation screen in Octo Expansion is. It doesn't take away your soul - which, in Splatoon, is both the thing that makes you "you" and the thing that allows you to respawn, which is literally coming back from the dead, by the way. 50% diluted sanitized ink takes away your memories (which are then made into memcakes and stored in a Kamabo Co. facility), but it doesn't take away your soul, and it doesn't impact your physical appearance more than making your irises green. You're still alive.
Non-diluted sanitized ink is used on failed test subjects to "fully" sanitize them. A fully sanitized Octarian retains neither their memories nor their soul (meaning that they can no longer respawn when splatted) and are considered clinically dead. Fully sanitized Octarians don't need to eat more than maybe once a month (although they still can eat more if they want to), don't breathe, don't have a pulse, can only produce 75% sanitized ink rather than normal ink, have green skin and blue-purple tentacles, and usually smell faintly of bleach. The smell comes from the special upkeep that sanitized Octarians need to do on their body to keep it from rotting alive. C. Tartar wasn't really doing that upkeep in Kamabo Co. - or he was only doing the bare minimum - so it's common to come across sanitized Octarians who are missing a limb or other parts of their body.
A freshly sanitized Octarian has lost all sense of self and is completely maleable to the whims of anyone around them. They aren't physically brainwashed, it's not some sci-fi mind control thing, it's just that sanitized Octarians don't know anything, and so if someone tells them to do something, they'll kinda just do it, no questions asked, because what else are they going to do? They know no reason to disobey. Also, while they don't have any actual memories, things like muscle memory still remain, which means the sanitized Octarians are still very useful in Kamabo Co.'s army.
A sanitized Octarian that has escaped the Metro and returned to the surface can slowly regain their sense of self (or at least build a new one) and become a functioning Inkfish again. There is currently no known cure to sanitization, but after the events of Side Order, Marina did continue working on the Memverse as a way to "cure" sanitized Octarians. However, this cure will only fix the mental aspects of sanitization, not the physical.
Agent 3 was a special case, because they were sprayed with non-diluted sanitized ink. However, since they hadn't been submerged in it nor injected with it, the effect it had on them was small and temporary. Only the portion of their face were the ink was was turned green and "dead", while the rest of their body was unimpacted by the ink. The mental effects of the ink were also limited - their memories were temporarily innacessible, but not removed, and their soul was also mostly unaffected. They were still easily persuaded to do things they normally would not, though, which is why they obeyed the commands of C. Tartar. However, their natural limiter was also temporarily "deactivated" by the ink, which allowed them to push their body far beyond its limits in battle, which permanently disabled them after the fact. Going with our half-sanitized/fully-sanitized terminology here, Agent 3 would be considered 1/3 sanitized.
Most Octarians who came out of Kamabo Co. after Octo Expansion were fully sanitized and had to go through rehabilitation programs funded by Off the Hook to regain their sense of self and unlearn the harmful ideology that C. Tartar had poisoned their minds with. A few of the Octarians who came out were only half-sanitized, having been in the middle of the Kamabo Co. program when C. Tartar was defeated, or having been one of the few Octarians who "gave up" and stayed on the Metro forever, too scared to risk their lives in another challenge. However, these Octarians are few and far-between, and are much more rare than fully sanitized Octarians. Agent 3 is the only sanitized Inkling alive.
